Wedding Day Makeover - TLC - Wedding Hairstyles and Bridal Makeup

"This is the story of two brides who want two magical makeovers by two savvy stylists for their one special day."

Wedding Day Makeover is a new TV show for brides. It reveals the process of choosing wedding hairstyles and bridal makeup, and then the gorgeous bride at her wedding.

It begins with the bride and groom introducing themselves. We learn who they are; where they met; how long they have been together; how the groom proposed; and why they are getting married. Then there is a brief introduction of a beauty shop and its owner. She notes her bridal experience and passion for her job.

Days or weeks before her wedding day, the bride meets the owner for a consultation and trial. They are joined by one to six people such as friends, bridesmaids, sisters, mother, or even her future mother-in-law.

The consultation begins with an overview of the wedding. The bride shows a picture of her wedding dress and says where she will tie the knot. They discuss the theme and if it is inspired by a particular decade.

Next there is the discussion of hair and makeup. Is there a celebrity's style she wants to copy? What is her personality like? Is she going to go natural or dramatic? The bride shares the looks she wants, and the other ladies express their own opinions. After they reach a decision the experts get to work; while they do the transformation they share a few beauty secrets.

The reactions to the makeover are dramatic. Typically the bride hates it or loves her new look. They try a second makeover for comparison and further discussion.

One time after the bride was spun around in her chair to see her makeover for the first time, she looked as if she had just seen a ghost! She suddenly became very quiet. Her friend joked that she looked like a "mini Barbara Walters." So they tried something different.

Hours before the wedding ceremony begins, the beauty team strolls up with their rolling cosmetic train cases. They do the hair and makeup for the bride and the entire bridal party. These ladies gush over their hot new looks. When the bride herself has been transformed, she makes a grand entrance before her eagerly waiting bridesmaids.

Wedding video clips show highlights from the ceremony. Afterwards the bridesmaids and groom give short reviews to express how thrilled they were with the bride's stunning beauty.

Three beauty salons are featured prominently on Wedding Day Makeover. Nearly every episode has Yana Skylar from the Yana Beauty Studio; Mar Romero at TEAM Hair and Makeup; or Caren Lazarus of Design Visage. They all have a lot of experience, specialize in weddings, and are located in Southern California.

"What I love most about my job," said Mar Romero, "is that I get to play with lipsticks and eyeshadows all day long, and make women on their wedding day feel amazing."

Californian brides like classic side chignons and smoky eye makeup. False eyelashes and hair extensions are also popular. On previous episodes there has been an interest in a range of different decades from the 1920s to the 1950s. Since the salons are in Southern California many ladies want a movie star look or "old Hollywood glamour."

A few schemes are used to make the show different from reality and more interesting for TV. First, the brides bring along people to help them make beauty decisions, but it seems they are there mostly to offer contrary opinions and apply pressure.

Second, the hair and makeup artists don't let their clients see their work as they go along; they must wait until they are finished to add the drama of the big revelation.

Third, quite frequently the brides aren't entirely sure after seeing two different makeovers which look they'll actually choose, so they leave it until their wedding day to decide. This is done for TV to build suspense.

It's difficult not to feel the emotion of the event even if you're not about to get married or don't know the happy couple. Brides are often emotional and crying or tearing up when they first see their stunning new looks. They see themselves looking as beautiful as they had dreamed when they were little girls, or even more gorgeous than they could have imagined.

Wedding Day Makeover is one of several bridal shows now on TV including: Say Yes to The Dress; Bulging Brides; and Rich Bride, Poor Bride. It's a good new addition and it's long overdue. It's not a knock-off of another show--there's really nothing like it anywhere. It's a spin-off of the wildly popular TLC program for brides, Say Yes to The Dress.

It is highly recommended for brides especially those who are in California. If you like Say Yes to The Dress, you will probably enjoy Wedding Day Makeover. Bridesmaids can also use it to find their own styles.
